Investigating Concrete Failures: Typical Deterioration or Unique Conditions?

Todd Nelson, Principal
Joshua White, Associate Principal and Unit Manager

It's not unusual for concrete structures to exhibit cracking and spalling. While these common signs of deterioration are often due to common causes, they can also point to unusual circumstances that require an outside-the-box investigative approach.

In this webinar, materials engineer Todd Nelson and structural engineer Josh White focus on two distinctive projects involving cracks and spalls that resulted from uncommon structural and materials failures. The presenters discuss the process of conducting a structural and materials investigation and how, in these projects, the investigative process helped identify unique conditions that led to the failure.

By the end of the webinar, you will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of concrete structures
  • Describe the investigative approach and process
  • Identify common laboratory evaluation tools and nondestructive techniques used for problem-solving
  • Summarize the coordination required during an investigation of uncommon conditions

Attendees are eligible for one American Institute of Architects (AIA) HSW Learning Unit.
