Counterweight wire ropes are a crucial component of vertical lift bridge machinery that are expected to provide a long service and must be monitored and replaced when necessary.
In this paper, engineer Michael Broglie presents the common methods of evaluating counterweight ropes for replacement, the considerations in performing rope replacement work, and the considerations in planning rope replacement work to address typical challenges such as site constraints and limited marine, vehicular traffic, and/or rail outages.
Presented at the HEAVY MOVABLE STRUCTURES, INC. 20th Biennial Movable Bridge Symposium.
