Balboa Park Botanical Building Earns California Preservation Design Award

The Balboa Park Botanical Building in San Diego—where hundreds of plant species flourish indoors—received a 2025 California Preservation Design Award.

The WJE team designed a new sprinkler system to protect the proposed expansion of the Botanical Building, preserving the beauty of its original circa-1915 design. The approach helped restore the existing roof system, a key component of the building. The once deteriorating structure, with its graceful arcades, Palladian windows, and long-missing romantic pergola, is now renovated.
